DRB-HICOM BERHAD“S AUTO BUSINESS IS SET FOR FURTHER GROWTH
Shah Alam, Wednesday, December 30 – DRB-HICOM Berhad is looking at a three percent increase in its local automotive market share for the next calendar year – about 120,000 vehicles in the expected total industry volume of 540,000. The Group currently holds 19 per cent market share of the country“s total industry volume forecasted to close at 525,000 units.
DRB-HICOM“s Group Director of Automotive, Y Bhg Dato“ Nik Hamdam Nik Hassan said the Group plans to launch at least 10 new models and upgrades of its various marques and this is expected to spur the growth of its automotive business in the coming year. Whilst acknowledging the year ahead will continue to be a challenging one, DRB-HICOM Group will focus on enhancing its performance especially in the after-sales and service activities. These include the upgrading and refurbishing its after-sales and service outlets nationwide and enhancing its customer loyalty programmes.
The Group is currently the only player in Malaysia with a fully integrated automotive business which encompasses importation, manufacturing and assembly of vehicles, auto components manufacturing to distribution and after-sales activities. In DRB-HICOM Auto Solutions (DHAS), which takes care of importation of CBU vehicles for the Group, it also has two established pre-delivery inspection centres in Pekan and Shah Alam catering to the Group“s accessorisation, vehicle inspection and logistics requirements.
The Group distributes/assembles prime foreign marques such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Mahindra as well as local marques such as Proton, HICOM Perkasa and MODENAS. Four of the marques under the Group – Honda, Suzuki, Isuzu and Mitsubishi were among the top five in the J.D.Power Sales Satisfaction Index for 2009.
The Group also manufactures a wide range of auto components supplying to the national cars as well as the Group“s vehicle assembly plants in Pekan, Gurun and Pegoh, Melaka. DRB-HICOM Berhad is looking to continue diversifying its customer base for its components business, said Dato“ Nik Hamdam, who added that the incentives for localisation under the National Automotive Policy would most certainly be a boost for the Group“s auto components business.
Among the new launches for next year would be the Audi A5 and R8 by DRB-HICOM“s subsidiary Euromobil Sdn Bhd. “For the Audi brand we have seen a 92 percent increase in sales since 2008 and to further boost sales, we have invested more than RM10 million to promote the brand as well as to establish new and refurbished exclusive Audi 3“S“ centres in Penang, Johor Bahru and Glenmarie in Selangor, as well as showcasing the Audi global image corporate identity (CI) in Jalan Imbi in Kuala Lumpur. These regional centers are established to cater for the much needed after-sales and service requirements of Audi customers.
Another exclusive service centre for Audi customers in the Klang Valley will be launched in Jalan Chan Sow Lin next year,†said Dato“ Nik Hamdam. In 2010, an additional investment of RM10 million would be pumped in for promotional activities to strengthen the Audi brand presence.
With DRB-HICOM at the helm of the exclusive distributorship for Audi cars, we intend to revitalize the confidence in the Audi range of cars which was recently voted the number one brand in Europe. We will re-stabilise the resale value, its after-sales service performance, as well as enhancing the brand to place Audi among the top three premier cars in Malaysia.
Suzuki, another vibrant marque in the Group“s auto stable, will be launching at least 2 exciting new models in 2010. The Suzuki brand is distributed by the Group“s associate company Suzuki Malaysia Automoile Sdn Bhd (SMA). In the light of the vast improvement of Suzuki“s brand presence in Malaysia, its JV partners, i.e. Suzuki Motors Corporation and Itochu Corporation, has confidently allowed the popular Pekan-assembled Swift to be exported by middle of next year. These improvements can be further reflected in the latest J.D. Power Sales Satisfaction Index report where Suzuki has improved its position from 16th in year 2008 to the number three position in 2009.
“In the assembly of the Swift, DRB-HICOM and its partners Suzuki Motors Corporation and Itochu Corporation would be taking steps to increase the local components content from 16 per cent to 21 percent by mid next year, taking advantage of the localisation incentives under the National Automotive Policy.â€Â
“In meeting the expanding demands in the market, Suzuki Malaysia is also looking at appointing 4 new dealers, which will increase the total dealers to 34 nationwide. Suzuki is also embarking on the introduction and implementation of a new standardised Corporate Identity for all Suzuki“s sales and service outlets,†he said.
Honda, a marque that keeps bucking the trend captured seven percent of the Total Industry Volume for 2009 – about 37,000 units. “Armed with ever popular models like the City, CR-V, Accord and Civic as well as other soon to be launched models and variants, Honda is looking at reaching a volume of 40,000 in 2010,†said Dato Nik Hamdam.
The Honda brand which is managed by the Group“s associate company Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd, also has an assembly plant in Pegoh Melaka, which assembles the City, Civic, CR-V and Accord models. “Honda is also looking at increasing their local contents to up to 60 per cent in some of its models.â€Â
Another marque which will be looking at an increase in sales would be Mitsubishi, exclusively distributed by the Group“s associate company, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Mitsubishi Malaysia is looking at a 25 percent increase sales from an annual volume of 8,000 to at least 10,000, especially with the launch of exciting models which include variants to the Pajero and the Lancer models.
EON Berhad which is presently 79% owned by DRB-HICOM would continue to enhance its meaningful contribution to the Proton sales volume via its 40-strong 3“S“ centres nationwide. Some RM20 million investment will be put up to refurbish and upgrade all its 3“S“ branches to comply with the latest Proton corporate identity requirements. In line with the Group“s focus on after-sales and service activities, EON will embark on an extensive campaign to promote its after-sales capabilities which would also include collision repair business. EON Berhad will be looking at serving 300,000 customers in 2010 for its after-sales and service activities.
The Group“s motorcycle brand MODENAS, the manufacturer and assembler of the Malaysian-made motorcycles and scooters, will be continuing its aggressive effort to increase market share and brand presence.
Buoyed by the success of the popular GT 128 launched in March 2009, MODENAS has enhanced its R & D capabilities where it is now ready to embark on a more extensive in-house engine development programme. “The recently launched CT 110 was a significant success garnering sales volume of 2000 to 2500 a month. MODENAS is looking at launching its most competitively priced model CT100 Edition in January 2010 and this is expected to push the company“s domestic monthly sales volume by 50 per cent to 6000 units.â€Â
MODENAS, which is also launching a replacement to its Elegan Scooters in June next year, will also be embarking aggressively into the export market, especially the huge Indonesian and Indochina market.
The Group is currently in talks with potential partners to manufacture/assemble hybrid/electric vehicles in Malaysia. Over one year ago, MODENAS has started having joint development work with both Petronas Research and Universiti Sains Malaysia and are now having running prototypes in both the hybrid and electric versions of its scooters for possible commercialization in the near future.
Dato Nik Hamdam said the Group is looking at its automotive business in a holistic manner to support and enhance its human capital development via the setting up of its own Automotive College, which will begin the enrolment of its first batch of students in early 2010.
“The temporary campus will first be located in the current integrated automotive complex in Pekan and will be taking in about 140 students for diploma courses in automotive field†he said, adding that some RM30 million will be spent by the Group to develop the college into a world class automotive learning centre. ends.

DRB-HICOM Automotive Plant Celebrates 25th Anniversary in Pekan
DRB-HICOM Berhad“s integrated automotive complex in Pekan –which grew from one-plant unit to a four plant complex, assembling world class marques like Mercedez Benz, Suzuki and Isuzu, celebrated its 25th anniversary on Saturday, December 12, 2009.
The celebration held at the DRB-HICOM Automotive Complex was graced by His Royal Highness Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta“in Billah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri“ayatuddin Al Mu“adzam Shah, DKP, the Sultan of Pahang and his Royal Highness Tengku Abdullah Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta“in Billah, the Tengku Mahkota Pahang, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Dato“ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak.
In his welcoming address, the Group Managing Director of DRB-HICOM Berhad, Dato“ Sri Hj Mohd Khamil Jamil said that as of September this year, the complex has produced close to half a million vehicles from at least two dozen makes. “Since then we have invested almost RM746 million here and this includes the construction of two automotive plants, a PDI centre and a plant for special purpose vehicles for the army.â€Â
The automotive complex has come a long way from being a mere support to the timber industry to playing a significant role in the development of the automotive industry in the country. The complex is not only home to world class production line of renowned marques like Mercedes-Benz, Isuzu, Hicom Perkasa, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Daewoo and Ssang Yong; it has also been designated as one of the country“s five automotive hubs alongside those in Shah Alam, Gurun, Tanjung Malim and Bertam.
“I would say that it was not easy for us to achieve this status for owners of these marques demand strict adherence to global standards in quality. The Mercedes-Benz (C, E and S class) assembled in this complex is on par in terms of quality with the cars manufactured in Daimler AG“s plants in Germany, due to our strict adherence to the standards set by Daimler,†said Dato“ Sri Hj Mohd Khamil.
“We are proud to say that not only we have the special skills to assemble world class marques but also to assemble and manufacturer vehicles for defence such as military trucks and armoured vehicles,†he added, saying that there is also a robotic arm assemble line – the first in the east coast, for Suzuki.
The 96-hectare complex is also the main component in Pahang“s automotive industrial park that will be expanded to 400 hectares as part of the effort to make Pekan the national automotive hub under the East Coast Economic Region initiative.
In 25 years, DRB-HICOM“s automotive complex has helped accelerate the development in Pekan. It has spurred automotive related downstream activities in surrounding areas.
Since 1984 the complex has generated a revenue of close to RM5 billion and last year alone it contributed about RM 442 million in excise duties and taxes in Pahang and this is expected to increase to RM525 million this year.
“About 70 per cent of our 2000-men workforce is from Pekan and we even have the second generation working for us.â€Â
According to Dato“ Sri Hj Mohd Khamil, in order to further enhance the status of Pekan as the premier automotive hub in the region, the Group is in the process of setting up a world class automotive college, which will begin the enrolment of its first batch of students in 2010.

This package is the result of a series of constructive meetings and dialogues between Group and the Taxi Associations, said Dato“ Sri Hj Mohd Khamil, who added that all concerns and issues relating to the purchases and ownerships of taxis were resolved during these dialogues.
“This smart partnership is part of DRB-HICOM“s commitment to work with our stakeholders to produce mutually beneficial and sustainable programmes and the Group is looking forward to similar discussions with our other stakeholders,.†said Dato“ Sri Hj Mohd Khamil

We believe that the ‘6-in-1“ deal is the only product and services package available that would benefit all taxi operators. HONDA Malaysia Cars RON95 Compatible
Honda Malaysia, all Honda cars require a minimum RON91 and any number above the minimum RON is safe and will not affect the performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle.
For Civic Type R, RON97 is recommended because of its high performance engine. A higher RON produces more power for this performance sedan.
When fuel with lower RON is used, engine knocking happens, resulting in reduced performance and fuel efficiency. To prevent engine knocking, all models from Honda Malaysia are equipped with knock sensors, detectors that signal engine operation to slow down the ignition timing (spark plug action) in case of engine knocking, which would consequently affect the vehicle“s performance and fuel efficiency. Knock sensors can also run on fuel with a minimum octane number of 91.
For models distributed before 2001 or by non-authorised Honda dealers, owners are advised to cross check the vehicle“s minimum RON requirement by referring to their owner“s manuals.

Despite the tensed market condition, Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd announced that its March 2009 sales has hit an all time high of 3,905 units, equivalent to 55% of increase year-on-year. The breakthrough achievement also means that Honda had captured 10% of the Total Industry Volume (TIV) market share (passenger vehicles) in March as reported by Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) recently.
“In view of the current market situation, it is truly a momentous experience for us to be reporting a series of vibrant results, in fact, from the beginning of the year. “At Honda, we constantly adhere to our principle of providing products of the highest quality at a reasonable price, which makes our products relevant to the market, regardless of the surrounding circumstances.
