DRB-HICOM Berhad (“DRB-HICOM” or the “Group”) is one of the nation’s largest and most diverse conglomerates. We have key businesses in six core sectors: Automotive, Aerospace and Defence,Postal, Banking, Services, and Properties.
Born from the merger between Government-owned Heavy Industries Corporation of Malaysia Berhad (HICOM) and Diversified Resources Berhad (DRB) in 1996, DRB-HICOM turned 112-year-old in 2022. Over the long history of the company, it actively built its portfolio in creating end-to-end value chains for its key businesses. In recent years, DRB-HICOM has also embarked on a rationalisation strategy to dispose non-core assets, thus implementing a leaner and more efficient developmental resources management plan. It continues to create new revenue streams and the injection of new lines of businesses through the execution of strategic moves aimed at increasing growth and profitability.
The Group’s Automotive arm can be considered one of the most comprehensive automotive businesses in the country, involved in the manufacturing, assembling and distribution of passenger and commercial vehicles, including motorcycles, and is also a licensee of Avis Rent-A-Car in Malaysia. Among the many operating companies, the best-known locally and internationally is PROTON Holdings Berhad (PROTON), Malaysia’s first and ASEAN’s only true-blue automotive original equipment maker (OEM), and national motorbike company MODENAS.
In Aerospace and Defence, the company is involved through its subsidiaries, Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (CTRM), which plays an important role in the global supply chain of aviation parts, and DRB-HICOM Defence Technologies Sdn. Bhd. (DEFTECH), a premier defence and aerospace company that provides armoured and other highly specialised vehicles to the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In the Postal sector, DRB-HICOM owns Pos Malaysia Berhad, the national postal services provider, while in Banking, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad champions values-based Islamic banking across the country.
Within the Group’s Services division are vehicle inspections under Pusat Pemeriksaan Kenderaan Berkomputer Sdn. Bhd. (PUSPAKOM); tertiary education via DRB-HICOM University of Automotive Malaysia (DRB-HICOM University); ground handling services for aircraft provided by Pos Aviation Sdn. Bhd.; and logistics services under Pos Logistics Berhad.
In the Properties sector, DRB-HICOM is specialised in property development and the management of assets built under concession agreements with the Government. Although well-known for the prestigious Glenmarie brand of residential development, the company is now shifting its focus towards industrial estates, leveraging more than 30 of experience and expertise in this niche area.
DRB-HICOM also developed Proton City, a 4,000-acre township comprising industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential activities and home to PROTON in Tanjong Malim, Perak. Through Media City Ventures Sdn. Bhd., which owns a concession from the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia to develop, operate, and maintain Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s broadcast centre in the capital city. Similarly, through Northern Gateway Infrastructure Sdn. Bhd., DRB-HICOM developed the new Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security Complex (ICQS) at Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, and now manages the asset under a concession agreement.
The Group has 82 operating companies within its stable and a workforce of some 46,000 employees. With a range of operations that is diverse yet interlinked to create synergy, DRB-HICOM has built a strong foundation with great potential for the future, maintaining its stature as one of the nation’s largest and most diversified conglomerates and one that is resilient in facing future challenges.
